Spotted Lanternfly

Spotted lanternfly's are an invasive species of flying insect that came to the east coast US in 2014. In late 2018-2020, lanternfly's spread greatly to many states and are still a growing problem.

Spotted lanternfly's cause damage to trees by sucking sap from the stems as adults and nymphs. They mostly feed off of tree-of-heaven, an invasive plant species, but are also known to make grape vines, fruit trees, ornamental trees, and other woody trees their host.

Lanternfly's first hatch in early May, become adults as early as July, and begin laying eggs in September. Egg masses can be found on host plants, or smooth surfaces like brick and stone, higher up. Adults are easiest to spot at dusk or night when they migrate.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and their PennState Extension have issued guidelines on how to take down these pests. When dealing with eggs, it is best to scrape them off and deposit them in alcohol/hand sanitizer to kill them. PDA has also suggested several types of pesticides that can treat infested areas including, Dinotefuran, Imidacloprid, Beta-cyfluthrin, Bifenthrin, Carbaryl, Zeta-cypermethrin, Malathion, Neem oil, Natural pyrethrins, Insecticidal soaps, systemic pesticides, and foliar sprays. Sticky traps as well for capturing nymphs (who are also attracted to spearmint oil)
